Abstract

This work discusses the use of cryptocurrencies and CBDCs as ways to improve the efficiency and security of financial transactions in smart cities. As well as blockchain technology, which is the basis for these digital currencies, it allows safe and fast transactions to be carried out without the need for financial intermediaries. The implementation of blockchain-based financial solutions such as cryptocurrencies and CBDCs can further provide significant benefits for smart cities, such as increased efficiency and reduced costs. Projects such as the Municipal Bank and Social Currencies based on blockchain, from Talca, in Chile and the Municipal Bank and Social Currencies from the city of Niterói, Brazil, were also shown, and their significant impacts on the economy of these localities, helping to increase the efficiency of financial transactions and access to credit for citizens. However, it is important to consider their advantages, disadvantages and regulations as well as popular acceptance of these solutions.
