Abstract

This scientific work analyzes the role of information technology in building smart and sustainable cities in line with Sustainable Development Goal 9 - Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure. The use of technologies such as sensors, IoT, GIS, and AI is crucial to reduce energy consumption and minimize the environmental impacts of cities. The work discusses the main IT technologies and their role in creating more sustainable cities, as well as the challenges and opportunities of implementing them in different urban contexts. Issues such as the high cost of large-scale implementation, inequality in access to technology, and excessive dependence on IT are also addressed. The objective is to analyze the technologies used and identify the main challenges for their implementation, as well as recommend strategies to minimize problems and maximize benefits. Literature shows that IT is crucial to building smart and sustainable cities, allowing for real-time data collection and analysis, process optimization, and development of more efficient and cost-effective solutions. The application of IT can improve citizen participation in urban management, allowing access to relevant information and collaboration. IT must be integrated to ensure its proper application in building smart and sustainable cities. The justification for this scientific work is the global need to build more efficient and less polluting cities, although issues related to costs, privacy, inequality, and technological dependence need to be addressed properly. The use of IT is an effective way to achieve this objective.
